I can tackle a lot of different projects around the house, but plumbing - with the exception of simple stuff, like fixing a leaky faucet - has always been my kryptonite. Regardless, when I found these SharkBite fittings I did a little research, read the reviews, watched a few instructional videos, and figured I'd give them a shot. Let me tell you, they are a complete game-changer. When I went to start the original project I was going to use them for though, I got a nasty surprise: the gate valve on my main water shutoff had failed, and I couldn't turn the water in my house off. Well, if I was going to make those other repairs using SharkBite fittings, why not use them to replace the main shutoff? So I did, and it worked out beautifully. Installation was painless, and I saved a few hundred dollars and couldn't be happier. By the way, replacing the main shutoff is what I needed this coupling for. Cutting out the old valve left a gap too large to install the Cash Acme 24736LF Sharkbite Slip Ball Valve, 3/4-Inch by itself (max gap 2.25"), so I had to cut a larger section of pipe, put this coupling at one end, and the ball valve at the other, with a piece of new pipe between them. Presto! All fixed, and nary a sign of a leak.

Update on 1/25/2018: I kept a close eye on the new main shutoff for quite some time after I installed it, but now, over a year later, it's still standing strong, with not the slightest hint of a leak.

Update on 6/19/2019: Two and a half years later, and still no sign of any leakage whatsoever.

Easy to install and really does bite onto your copper pipe like crazy. I used it to install a water pressure regulator on my water main (110 PSI incoming) and had no issues with the high pressure going through it. The best thing about the sharkbites is that you can rotate the pipe once they are installed, so I can rotate my pressure gauges and ball valves for easy access. Pay the extra money and grab yourself some sharbites.

Caution: do yourself a favor and BUY THE UNIVERSAL DISCONNECT TONGS. The little orange disconnect clip they give you is total trash and does not work very well at all.

First, I have to say I'm not the handiest person in the world. I've done many minor general repairs around my home over the years, but plumbing issues have always been kind of intimidating. Unfortunately, several months ago one of my pex pipes under the house, leading to the kitchen sink, was chewed up by an animal that had managed to sneak down there. After researching the issue I attempted a couple of repairs that didn't get the job done.

While researching what other options I had online, I ran into many repair sites that raved about SharkBites for jobs such as the one I needed done. I talked to someone I knew who had used one in the past and likewise had nothing but positive things to say about them. I didn't have money for a plumber so based on all the positive reviews and word of mouth gave this item a shot.

It worked pefectly. I purchased a tubing cutter along with this, measured how much pex I'd have to cut, got under the house and it literally took me less than five minutes to cut the pex and install the SharkBite. I did this eight months ago and the repair is still holding strong.

The only thing I'd advise is that this item doesn't come with the removal tool, so I'd highly suggest getting that along with this. If you end up installing it incorrectly or unevenly, its very difficult to remove with the tool. Installation doesn't require a tool, only removal.

I can't even stress how relieved I was to find the SharkBite and that it was so easy to install. Highly recommended to repair minor holes in pipes or as a general coupler to join two pieces together.

I've never worked with plumbing until recently. I've done several successfully on my 1955 home using sharkbite products. It's amazingly easy to use and cost effective. You can use it on copper or pex or to connect the two together. You can also use it to connect a straight pipe to a screw on connector. You can get shark bite bite on and off valves as well. I suggest that you check around for pricing. They vary wildly on different sites and stores. I also strongly suggest that if you are a new to the use of this product and or plumbing that you visit YouTube and watch some of the DIY videos related to your project. There are numerous videos available by both professionals and DIY's. Believe me, you will feel much more confident after you watch one or more of these videos.
The sharkbite product has held well according to studies and the few that failed were thought to be due to burrs. To deburr your pipe use a deburring product on the end of each pipe or use sand paper or a nail file to sand until the end is smooth. Also the sharkbite must be inserted to the proper depth. Videos will show you how to do this simple step. You can also choose to insert a shut off valve which may come in handy in the future at relevant sites.
Pex is supposed to be superior to copper. I have found that pex is very cheap, easy to work with, and useful for patches. There are different kinds of pex. Pex A and pex B are what you will usually see available. Pex A is more flexible and expands, it is freeze resistant. You should use this if you live in a cold climate. It is also easier to use for small patches, like a few feet or less. I haven't seen Pex A for sale on Amazon but I've seen it at the local hardware and on ebay. Pex B is stiffer and harder to bend or straighten however warming it up helps. If you are using pex be sure to use the proper type particularly around hot water heaters.

This was $10 cheaper on Amazon then my local hardware store. Cost me close to $35 to fix my pipe by cutting out a 5 inch middle section, adding a new piece of cooper pipe with 2 shark bite connecters. Zero leaks. They are Somewhat difficult to remove tho. I found that out after realizing i cute my middle pipe about 1/2' to short and had to start over. It would have cost $75 just to have the plumber come to my house, not including the work. Great diy product.

Quality inconsistent with previous sharkbite fittings

I ordered a 4 pack of 1/2" straight connectors as I have had plenty of previous success using various types of sharkbites connectors in my homes.

When I received these connectors I observed they looked quite different from other Sharkbite connectors I had on hand. The finish on them was shiny and smooth as opposed to a darker stipple type pattern on all the other connectors I have used before.

Despite these inconsistencies I used one of the connectors on a 1/2" pex line. Turned the water back on, and the connection was leaking significantly which I have never experienced with Sharkbite products before. I removed the fitting, cleaned up the pex, and used a second connector from the 4 pack. Again, once the water lines pressurized this connector was leaking as well. After this I threw the whole 4 pack in the garbage and replaced the connector with one I located in my toolbox.

The product I purchased and received from amazon did not appear the same as, or function the same as, sharkbite products that I have used extensively prior to and after this purchase. I would surmise that the product sold and packaged as sharkbite fittings were either fraudulent or counterfeit, and if not I suppose they would be the gross statistical outlier that their production quality control overlooked.....

The comparatively high cost of these couplings is more than compensated by the lack of labour cost in installing them. They join copper to PEX perfectly (if you follow the instructions) and, after more than 30 years installed use in Europe, have been shown to last longer than soldered copper joints
